Cozumel Bar Crawl
& Nightlife Guide
Most tour companies won't touch this topic. We will, because we've lived here since 1996 and we know every bar on the island. Here's the honest guide to Cozumel's best bars, our actual bar hop tour route, happy hour deals, and everything cruise passengers need to know before they start drinking in a foreign port.
Our Bar Hop Tour
$55 per person • 4.5 hours • 5 bars • Drinks included • Local guide
We run the only locally-guided bar crawl on the island. Most cruise passengers try to do this solo, get lost, overpay, and miss their ship. Our tour costs less than going alone once you factor in what we cover — and we get you back to the pier on time. Every time.
The 5-Stop Route
Frozen Iguana cocktails & the legendary Wendy's experience
Where the crawl energy gets established. First drinks, first photos.
Frozen daiquiris in your flavor of choice
A palate cleanser between the heavy hitters. Cold and easy.
The full tourist spectacle — yard drinks, music, mayhem
This is the energy peak of the tour. Maximum crowd, maximum volume.
Cold beers and a moment to breathe with the locals
A deliberate cool-down. Great for conversation, terrible for Instagram.
Proper closing drink in a real bar
The tour ends here. Stay as long as you'd like. Taxis outside.

Best Bars in Cozumel
We've been on this island since 1996. These are the bars we'd actually send you to — and the one drink you need to order at each one.
Wet Wendy's
Wild & LegendaryIf you've heard of one bar in Cozumel, it's probably Wet Wendy's. Right on the main strip downtown, it's been a cruise passenger rite of passage for decades. Enormous frozen drinks, a loud crowd, and staff who have seen everything. The Iguana is mandatory. Get it, drink it, take the photo.
Señor Frog's
High-Energy Chain Party BarYes, it's a chain. Yes, it's loud and gimmicky and packed with cruise passengers. That is the point. Señor Frog's does exactly what it promises — yard-long drinks, body shots, music you can feel in your chest, and zero pretension. It's fun. Go once.
Woody's Bar & Grill
Laid-Back Local HangoutWoody's is where you go when you want to slow down. Cold beers, friendly staff who have lived on this island their whole lives, and a crowd that's more local than tourist. It's not fancy. It doesn't need to be. One of our personal favorites for exactly that reason.
Money Bar
Open-Air Beach BarMoney Bar sits right on the water near the cruise piers — open-air, breezy, and genuinely beautiful when the sun is still up. Better as a daytime or early-evening spot than a late-night one. The drinks are solid, the view is excellent, and the vibe is relaxed. A great first stop before things escalate downtown.
Fat Tuesday
Frozen Cocktail MachineFat Tuesday is exactly what it sounds like: a frozen daiquiri bar. Walk up, pick a flavor, walk away with something cold and sweet. No pressure, no fuss. Great for a mid-crawl stop when you want something refreshing that won't knock you sideways. Multiple flavors on tap, all decent.
Coconuts Bar & Grill
East Coast Cliff BarCoconuts is on Cozumel's wild east coast — on a cliff above the crashing Caribbean. It's not on the bar crawl route (it's too far out), but if you're doing a jeep or ATV tour, stop here in the afternoon. The setting is genuinely stunning and unlike anything downtown. Drinks are cold, the view is epic.
Kelley's Bar
Expat Sports BarKelley's has been an island institution for years. It's where expats watch football, where locals and visitors mix naturally, and where the conversation flows easier than the drinks. Sports on the screens, cold beer at fair prices, no pretense. The kind of bar that doesn't need to be discovered — it just exists, quietly, being exactly what it is.
The Pub
British-Style Pub DowntownA genuine pub on a Caribbean island. The Pub is a reliable late-night spot once the Señor Frog's crowd has headed back to their ships. Decent draft selection, pub food that actually holds up, and a calmer atmosphere than the main strip. Good place to end an evening properly.
Hemingway's
Literary Dive BarNamed for the right author. Hemingway's is a proper dive bar with character, cheap drinks, and a clientele that has usually been on the island longer than today. It's dark, it's cool, and it doesn't care what you're wearing. If you find yourself here past midnight, you're doing the bar crawl correctly.
Tiki Tok
Beachfront Party BarTiki Tok sits on the beach and operates loudly on the principle that everything is better in a swimsuit. It's a solid daytime-into-evening bar with good rum drinks, music, and the kind of crowd that's on vacation and acting like it. Gets more chaotic as the afternoon goes on, which is either a feature or a warning depending on your preference.
Happy Hour Guide
Cruise passengers have a limited window. Use it efficiently.
Most Cozumel bars run happy hours during the peak cruise-passenger hours — midday to mid-afternoon. Times can shift seasonally, so confirm when you arrive. These are accurate as of 2026.
Our Bar Hop Tour is timed to hit the best happy hours at each stop. You don't need to track the deals — we already have.
Downtown vs The Pier Zone
Not all of Cozumel's bars are equal. Location matters a lot.
Downtown Cozumel
5–10 min walk or $3–5 taxi from the pier. This is where locals drink and where the bars actually have character. Prices are lower, quality is higher, and you're not surrounded exclusively by tourists.
- Better prices (30–40% cheaper)
- More authentic atmosphere
- Where locals actually drink
- More bar variety
- Wet Wendy's, Woody's, The Pub
Near the Cruise Pier
Convenient if your ship leaves early, but you pay a premium for proximity. These bars are designed for rapid tourist turnover, not for a real night out. Closer to the ship does not mean better.
- Easy to get back quickly
- Higher prices for same drinks
- More tourist-oriented experience
- Less variety
- Fine if you have very little time
Our advice: Always go downtown. Take the 5-minute taxi. Spend the money you save on better drinks. If you're worried about time, set an alarm — don't skip the best bars just to be closer to the pier.
Cruise Passenger Nightlife Tips
Things your cruise director won't tell you, from people who have watched this play out for 30 years.
The all-aboard rule is absolute
Cruise ships do not wait for late passengers. The all-aboard time is final. We have watched ships sail away. It happens. Know your all-aboard time before your first drink, and set a phone alarm for 90 minutes before. Most Cozumel port stops run 6–8 hours — plenty of time for a great crawl if you manage it.
Taxis back to the pier are fast and cheap
A taxi from anywhere downtown to the pier is $3–5 USD and takes under 10 minutes. They run constantly. You do not need to factor in a long walk back. What you do need to factor in is enough sobriety to find and get into a taxi correctly. Official taxis only — they have a fixed-rate sign inside.
Drink prices and tipping
A beer at a tourist bar runs $4–6 USD. A cocktail is $7–12. Happy hour can cut this significantly. Tip $1 per drink minimum — USD is preferred and appreciated. Bartenders who get tipped well pour better. This is universal law. Most bars quote prices in USD; pesos are always accepted at the day's exchange rate.
How to get back if something goes wrong
If your group gets separated, the pier is your meeting point. Every taxi driver knows where the cruise ships dock — just say your ship's name. If you're genuinely lost or in a situation, call us: +1 (305) 767-2838 or email info@cozumelcruiseexcursions.net. We're on the island. We know where everything is. We'll help.
The simplest solution: Book our Bar Hop Tour. We pick you up, manage the timing, get you to 5 great bars, and return you to the pier on time. No logistics, no decisions, no missed ships. Just $55.

Safety Tips
Cozumel is genuinely one of the safer spots in Mexico. These tips are common sense, not cause for alarm.
The island has its own police force, a steady tourist economy that depends on visitor safety, and a tight-knit community that's watched over this place for generations. Our family has been here since 1996. We send our own kids to the same beaches and bars you're visiting. Act reasonably and you'll have zero problems.
Know your all-aboard time — seriously
This is the number one mistake cruise passengers make. Ships leave without you. Know your all-aboard time before you start drinking. Set an alarm for 90 minutes before. We mean this.
Use official taxis only
Cozumel taxis are government-regulated with fixed rates. Never get in an unmarked car. Taxi stands are at the pier, near the main plaza, and in front of most major bars. The rate downtown to the pier is posted — ask before you get in.
The buddy system is real
Don't let people wander off alone. The island is genuinely safe by Mexican resort standards, but alcohol and solo wandering at 2am is a bad combination everywhere. Stick together or agree on a meeting point.
Drink water. Aggressively.
Cozumel is hot and humid. You will drink more than you think, sweat more than you're used to, and dehydration accelerates everything. Order a water between every cocktail. It sounds boring. It prevents disaster.
Carry small USD bills
Most bars accept USD and Mexican pesos. Large bills create change problems. Carry $5s, $10s, and $20s. Tipping in USD is normal and appreciated — $1 per drink minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cozumel nightlife safe for cruise passengers?
Yes, with common sense applied. The downtown bar district is well-lit, heavily trafficked by tourists, and has a police presence. The biggest risk isn't crime — it's missing your ship. Know your all-aboard time, set an alarm, and take official taxis back to the pier. We've seen far more people have problems from over-drinking than from any safety issue.
What time does Cozumel nightlife start and end?
The main bar strip gets lively around 10am when cruise passengers arrive and the tourist bars open. Happy hours typically run from midday to late afternoon. For cruise passengers, the practical nightlife window is 10am to 4pm since most ships leave by 5–6pm. If you're staying overnight on the island, things pick up again around 9pm and the real local scene runs until 2–3am.
How much does a bar crawl in Cozumel cost?
On your own, a bar crawl hits roughly $8–15 per drink per bar, so expect to spend $50–80 for a full crawl with drinks at 5 bars. Our guided Bar Hop Tour is $55 per person and includes drinks at every stop, transportation between bars, a local guide who knows the scene, and no decision fatigue. Most people find the guided tour is cheaper than going it alone once you factor in getting lost, overpaying, and transport.
What is included in the $55 Bar Hop Tour?
The Bar Hop Tour ($55/person) includes: drinks at 5 bars (we buy the first round or two at each stop), transportation between venues, a local guide from our family-run operation, approximately 4.5 hours total, and a guaranteed return to the pier with time to spare. Groups of 6+ get a slight discount. Contact us to book.
What is the most famous bar in Cozumel?
Wet Wendy's is probably the most famous bar among cruise passengers — it's been a rite of passage on the island for decades. The frozen Iguana cocktail is legendary. Señor Frog's is also famous for its over-the-top party atmosphere. If you want the local answer rather than the tourist answer, Woody's Bar and Kelley's are where island residents actually drink.
Can I do the bar crawl with a cruise ship port stop?
Absolutely — it's one of the most popular things to do on a port day. Most cruise ships dock for 6–8 hours, which gives you plenty of time for a solid bar crawl. Our guided Bar Hop Tour is 4.5 hours and we guarantee you back at the pier on time. If you're going independently, leave yourself at least 60–90 minutes to get back to the pier before all-aboard.
Is there a dress code at Cozumel bars?
No formal dress code at any of the bars we recommend. The vibe is casual — shorts, t-shirts, sandals. Even the nicer restaurants downtown are smart-casual at most. You can walk from the beach bar to any downtown bar without changing. The one exception: some beach clubs require you to wear shoes inside their restaurant area.
What is the drinking age in Mexico?
The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18. This is enforced at some establishments, particularly the larger tourist bars. Carry ID. Bars that primarily serve tourists tend to check more consistently than local spots. If you're under 18 and visiting with family, you can still enjoy the beach clubs and most restaurants — you just won't be ordering alcohol.
Downtown vs the tourist pier area — where should I drink?
For the best experience, head downtown (about a 5–10 minute walk or a $3–5 taxi from the pier). The bars closest to the pier are designed to extract money from cruise passengers quickly — they're fine but overpriced. Downtown bars are more authentic, better priced, and have a better atmosphere. Wet Wendy's, Woody's, and The Pub are all downtown.
How do I get back to the cruise pier after drinking?
Official taxis are everywhere downtown — there are stands near the main plaza and in front of most major bars. The ride from downtown to the pier is fixed-rate, about $3–5 USD. Never get into an unmarked car. Taxi drivers know the cruise ship schedules and will tell you if you need to hurry. Our Bar Hop Tour includes transport back to the pier.
Ready for the Cozumel Bar Crawl?
Let us handle the logistics. Five great bars, four and a half hours, all your drinks covered, and a guaranteed ride back to the pier. $55 per person — the only way to do the bar hop tour properly.
