You arrive for your cenote excursion, and before anyone gets in the water a guide tells you to shower off, and not to apply sunscreen or bug spray.
Most people comply and assume it is a formality. A surprising number quietly skip it — they applied sunscreen hours ago, they are not dirty, the shower is cold, and what difference could one person make?
The answer to that last question is the whole point, and it is not the answer most visitors expect. Cenote swimming operates under rules that make no sense if you are picturing a swimming pool or the sea. Once you understand the hydrogeology, the rules stop feeling like bureaucracy and start feeling obvious.

A Cenote Is Groundwater, Not a Body of Water
Start with what you are actually swimming in.
The Yucatán Peninsula and Cozumel are limestone. Rainwater is mildly acidic, limestone is soluble, and over an immense span of time water has dissolved the rock from within, producing an enormous network of underground voids and passages. Where a cave ceiling collapses, the groundwater beneath is exposed. That opening is a cenote — from the Mayan dzonot.
This is the critical implication: the water in a cenote is not sitting in a basin. It is the visible surface of an aquifer.
There is no meaningful inlet and no outlet you can point to. There is no tide flushing it twice a day, no river carrying anything downstream, no filtration plant, no chlorination. The water is connected — through rock — to a much larger underground system, and it moves through that system slowly. Sometimes very slowly.
The Yucatán has almost no surface rivers precisely because of this. Water goes straight down through porous limestone rather than running across the land. For most of the region's history, cenotes were not attractions. They were the water supply, which is why Mayan settlement patterns track them so closely.
Now reconsider the shower. In the ocean, a wave takes what comes off your skin and disperses it into an effectively unbounded volume with constant circulation. In a cenote, there is no wave, no dispersal, and no meaningful volume of exchange. Whatever comes off you goes into the aquifer and stays in the neighborhood.
What Actually Comes Off Your Skin
The list is longer than most people assume. Sunscreen is the headline, but it is not alone:

- Body lotion, moisturizer, and sunless tanner
- Hair product — gel, wax, leave-in conditioner, dry shampoo
- Deodorant and antiperspirant
- Makeup and foundation
- Perfume, cologne, and scented oils
Each is a small quantity. Now multiply by every person who swims that day, then by every day of the season, into a system with no flushing mechanism. That is how a genuinely small individual contribution becomes a measurable cumulative load. There is a second reason beyond chemistry. Oils and organic residue feed microbial and algal growth. In water this clear, that shows up visibly, and clarity is the entire reason anyone comes.
The "Reef-Safe Sunscreen" Problem
This deserves directness, because the marketing is genuinely misleading.
Conventional chemical sunscreens contain UV-filtering compounds — oxybenzone and octinoxate are the most scrutinized — with documented harm to coral and aquatic organisms. Several jurisdictions have restricted them outright. That much is well established and widely known.
What is less well known is that "reef-safe" and "biodegradable" are largely unregulated marketing terms. There is no universal standard a product must meet to print them on a bottle. Some products bearing those words are meaningfully better. Others have simply swapped one questionable filter for a less-studied one.
And even a genuinely biodegradable product carries a catch that matters specifically here: biodegradable describes what eventually happens to a substance, not what happens on contact. Degradation takes time and typically requires microbial activity, oxygen, and light — three things in short supply in a dim, enclosed, slow-moving groundwater system. In the meantime the product is in the water, and the degradation process itself consumes oxygen.
So the guidance at a cenote is stricter than at a reef, and reasonably so:
Wear no sunscreen at all when cenote swimming. Rinse off whatever you applied earlier.
If you need sun protection for the rest of the day — and on Cozumel you do — the answer is physical, not chemical. A rash guard or swim shirt, a hat, and shade. Fabric does not wash off. Apply chemical sunscreen after you are out of the cenote and dry, if you are heading to a beach afterward.

Cozumel's Particular Vulnerability: The Freshwater Lens
Cozumel adds a wrinkle the mainland does not have, and it is the reason the rules deserve extra respect here.
Cozumel is an island. Its fresh groundwater does not sit on bedrock — it floats, as a lens-shaped body of fresh water resting on denser saltwater beneath. Fresh water is less dense than salt water, so rainfall percolating down forms a buoyant layer above the seawater that saturates the rock below.
Geologists call this a freshwater lens, and the boundary between the two layers is the halocline — sometimes visible in cenotes as a shimmering, oily-looking blur where fresh and salt water meet, an optical effect caused by the difference in refractive index. It looks like a distortion in the water. It is a density boundary.
An island lens is a small, closed, rain-fed system. It is far more sensitive to contamination than a continental aquifer with a vast catchment, and it recharges only from rain that falls on the island itself. There is no upstream, and nowhere else for the water to come from.

The Other Rules, Now That They Make Sense
Do not touch the formations. Stalactites and stalagmites grow at rates measured in fractions of a millimeter per year — a modest formation can represent thousands of years. Skin oils deposit a film that blocks the mineral deposition the formation depends on, and growth at that point simply stops. A single touch can end a process older than most of recorded history.
Take a proper shower, not a symbolic one. Rinse hair as well as skin. Hair product is one of the most commonly overlooked contributors.
Wear the life jacket if asked. Stay on marked paths. Limestone is sharp, uneven, and slick when wet, and off-path traffic damages both formations and footing.
