Learn More & BookIf your looking to experience something different in Cozumel Mexico during your next trip, and visiting from June-November, you may want to check out the Baby Sea Turtle Hatching on the gorgeous Beaches of the Eastern Shore of Cozumel (also known as the other side of Cozumel). You may even be able to give a helping hand. We are very lucky to have the opportunity to welcome hundreds of exquisite sea turtles who are in search of the best place to build their nest, and the Eastern Beaches of Cozumel are perfect to host Baby Sea turtles with the help of locals and tourists to guide them to the sea. These two species are known as the Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta Caretta), and the Green Turtle (Chelonia Mydas). They generally lay around 150 eggs, and are able to nest as many as 6 times during one season
Approximately 2 months after they lay their eggs, the Baby Sea Turtles emerge to the surface, and typically later in the afternoon, when temperatures are lower. They make their way to the Caribbean Sea, and use the light reflecting from the sea as their guide. Those that reach maturity and make it out to the immense ocean may live to age 80 in the wild. Also Cozumel is known to inhabit Hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys Imbricate) and the Giant Leatherback Turtles (Thermocouples Coriander) swimming around the reefs of Cozumel Mexico.
It takes the newly hatched turtles as much as three days to climb to the surface and head for the ocean. Instinctively, the newborns wait until they sense less light and cooler temperatures, which tell them it is dusk and a safer time to march toward the surf. Volunteers are an important part of the effort to insure healthy populations of sea turtles. Quite often, the first turtles to hatch start their climb to surface and pack sand on top of the remaining eggs, making it difficult for the late-hatchers to escape the deep nest.
Many locals and travelers give a helping hand to guide the baby sea turtles to the Caribbean Sea during the later part of the day, usually starting around 5PM. Cozumel visitors are invited to join and support this important conservation program to save and protect these endangered species of turtles. Work side by side with brigade volunteers and get hands on experience with turtles making their nests, laying eggs as well as watch baby turtles making their way to the sea for the first time.
The Loggerhead Turtles or "Caguama"(Caretta caretta):
Their nesting season is from April to July. The average loggerhead measures around 90cm (35in) long when fully grown, although larger specimens of up to 270cm (110in) have been discovered. The adult loggerhead sea turtle weighs approximately 135 kg. (300 lb), with the largest specimens weighing in at more than 454 kg. (1,000 lb). They are Reddish-brown in color. Females nest 3-7 times every season with approximately 120 round white eggs in each nest. The eggs hatch in about 60 days. Feed primarily on shellfish such as crabs and snails. Loggerheads are considered an endangered species and are protected by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
The Green Turtle or "Blancas"(Chelonia mydas):
Their nesting season is from June to September. They are dark olive green in color. Females nest 3-7 times a year in Cozumel, and each nest contains 120-150 eggs, which are round and white, which hatch within 60 days. They eat primarily sea grass. Adult green turtles grow to 1.5 meters (5 ft) long. The average weight of mature individuals is 68–190 kg (150–420 lb) and the average carapace length is 78–112 cm (31–44 in). Exceptional specimens can weigh 315 kg (690 lb) or even more, with the largest known green turtle having weighed 395 kg (870 lb) and measured 153 cm (60 in) in carapace length. Green turtles are also considered an endangered species and are protected by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
1. Parks and Museum Foundation: Punta Sur Park Turtle Salvation Program -
This program began in 2000 and covers the beach area from the entrance of Punta Sur Park all the way to the south lighthouse. Since access to the Punta Sur Park and its beaches is closed to the public at night, this program enjoys significant protection from human poachers. In addition, the Parks and Museum Foundation has served for decades on the City's Turtle Program Management Committee and sends its brigade one night a week to work all the beaches (not just inside Punta Sur). This Parks Foundation endeavor offers turtle observation and liberation events daily during the nesting season. Do you want to help release baby turtles during your trip to Cozumel? 2.Cozumel Volunteer Turtle Salvation Program
This program began back in the late 1980's and covers the beaches from Mezcalitos south to the Punta Sur Park entrance. What began as a grassroots effort by a few citizens interested in turtle conservation, eventually evolved into a small City funded program whereby the City relied upon volunteers to do the nightly work, but were able to fund the salaries of 2 biologists to supervise the sanctuary and the work of the volunteers. For many years, no other funds were available to further develop the program or to provide supplies, gas or vehicles for the volunteer groups working the beaches each night.
