Cozumel ATV & Jeep
Tour Routes 2026
Four ways to explore the island overland — from a smooth private Jeep along the wild east coast to ATV jungle trails that get your heart pounding. We'll tell you which route is right for you, what each trail actually feels like, and what to bring.
Our Three Adventure Tours Compared
All four land tours are operated by our family. Same guides, same standards, same back-to-ship guarantee — just different vehicles, routes, and vibes.
Private Jeep Tour
EasyThe most relaxed way to see the whole island. A private Jeep gives your group total freedom — stop when you want, linger at the best photo spots, and visit locals-only tequila bars on the wild east coast. Mostly paved roads with light off-road sections.
- Private vehicle — just your group
- East coast & scenic windward side
- Tequila tasting stop included
- Beach stop with swim time
- Snorkel at a reef
- Explore the island at your own pace
ATV & Snorkel Combo
ModerateCozumel's most popular land adventure. You'll rip through jungle trails on an ATV — actual dirt roads, actual bumps — and then cool off with a snorkel at a nearby reef. This is where the island comes alive. Not for anyone who wants a smooth ride.
- ATV through authentic jungle trails
- Snorkeling at a coral reef
- Smaller dirt paths and some bumps
- Helmets and safety gear provided
- Guided by local experts
- Best for active adventurers
Dune Buggy Adventure
ModerateSide-by-side open-air buggies that fit two people. Same adventure as the ATV tour but more social — great for couples or friends who want to ride together. You hit off-road trails, stop at a beach club, and snorkel before heading back.
- Open-air buggy — wind in your face
- Off-road trails across the island
- Beach club stop included
- Snorkel stop at a reef
- Good for couples and groups
- Similar feel to ATV, more social
Harley-Davidson Tour
Easy (paved only)The premium option for riders. You get an actual Harley-Davidson motorcycle and follow a local guide along the coastal highway — completely paved, perfectly smooth. Best views of the Caribbean and the wildest coastline, just no jungle thrashing.
- Ride a real Harley around the island
- Smooth coastal highway route
- Guided group ride with a local lead
- Great for motorcycle enthusiasts
- Most scenic road on the island
- No off-road — pure asphalt cruise
Cozumel's Best Routes Explained
Cozumel is about 30 miles long and 10 miles wide. There are four distinct zones — and each one has a completely different personality. Here's what to expect on each route.
East Coast Road
The Wild Side of Cozumel
This is what most tourists never see. The windward eastern coast faces the open Caribbean with zero protection — waves crash hard against rocky shelves, the water is a violent beautiful turquoise, and there are almost no crowds. Strong currents make swimming dangerous here, but the scenery is unreal.
Route Highlights
- No swimming — currents too strong
- Incredible photos of crashing waves
- Bob Marley bar and Mezcalitos beach clubs
- Multiple tequila and mezcal tasting spots
- Wild iguanas and birds all over the road
- Feels like a different planet from the west coast

San Gervasio Road (Inland Jungle)
Through the Heart of the Island
The central road cuts through dense tropical jungle and connects the tourist west coast to the wild east coast. This is ATV territory — the dirt paths that branch off this road are exactly where you want to be on an ATV or dune buggy. Mayan ruins at San Gervasio are nearby if you want a cultural stop.
Route Highlights
- Main ATV trail territory
- Dense jungle canopy over the road
- San Gervasio Mayan ruins nearby ($12 entry)
- See coatis, iguanas, birds in the wild
- Red dirt paths branch off the main road
- Crossroads of island — connects everything

Southern Point — Punta Sur
Lighthouse, Lagoons & Crocodiles
The far south tip of the island where the Caribbean meets the Gulf of Mexico. El Faro lighthouse stands at the point with views in every direction. Punta Sur Eco-Beach Park contains a crocodile lagoon, bird sanctuary, and gorgeous beaches — it's a full half-day by itself if you have time.
Route Highlights
- El Faro lighthouse at the southern tip
- Punta Sur Eco-Beach Park ($16 entry)
- Crocodile reserve and observation tower
- Untouched beaches with zero crowds
- Bird watching — frigates, herons, flamingos
- Best photo spot on the whole island

Western Coast — Town & Port Side
Where Ships Dock & Life Happens
The calm western coast where all three cruise piers sit and San Miguel town spreads north-south along the waterfront malecón. The water here is glassy-calm — perfect for snorkeling and diving. Most of the restaurants, shops, and beach clubs are on this side. Good for easy walking and exploring.
Route Highlights
- San Miguel town — shops, food, culture
- Cruise piers: Punta Langosta, International, Puerta Maya
- Calm water — best for snorkeling from shore
- Malecón waterfront promenade
- Harley tour departs from and returns to this side
- All major beach clubs: Buccanos, Mr. Sancho's, Playa Mia

What to Wear & Bring
Nothing ruins an adventure faster than the wrong shoes or a waterlogged phone. Here's exactly what you need — and why.
Closed-toe shoesEssential
Required for ATV and dune buggy tours. Flip flops will get your feet shredded on jungle trails. Sneakers are perfect.
Reef-safe sunscreenEssential
Cozumel marine parks ban regular sunscreen. If your snorkel stop is at a reef, biodegradable only. Apply before you go — saves time.
Change of clothes for snorkelEssential
ATV + Snorkel means you get wet halfway through. Bring dry shorts and a shirt in a small dry bag. You will want them.
Goggles or sunglasses strap
ATV speed + jungle wind = your sunglasses becoming a projectile. Use a strap or leave them in the Jeep.
Small dry bag
Keep your phone and wallet dry during the snorkel portion. A $10 waterproof phone case works great too.
Cash for tips and tequila
Guides work hard — tip $5–10 per guide. Tequila tasting bars on the east coast take USD cash. Bring $30–40 extra.
Light jacket or layer (optional)
Early morning ATV rides can be surprisingly cool when you're moving fast through shaded jungle. A light layer helps.
ATV vs Jeep vs Dune Buggy — Which to Choose?
The honest answer: there's no bad choice. But here's how we guide people who ask us every day.

Private Jeep Tour
Comfortable ride, your own schedule, covers east coast + tequila + beach + snorkel. Best value for sightseeing.
"I want the most adventure and don't mind getting dirty"
ATV & Snorkel Combo
Real jungle trails, real bumps, real mud. The ATV is the most physically engaging experience on the island.
"We're a couple who wants adventure but to ride together"

Side-by-side buggies are perfect for two. Same off-road vibe as ATV but you share the cockpit.
"I'm a motorcycle rider and want something different"
Harley-Davidson Tour
There is nothing cooler than cruising the Cozumel coastal highway on a Harley. Paved only, premium experience.
"I'm traveling with older parents or young kids"
Private Jeep Tour
Private vehicle means you go at your pace. Easy on the body, flexible schedule, and everyone fits comfortably.
"I only have 3 hours and want land + water adventure"
ATV & Snorkel Combo or Dune Buggy

Important: East Coast Swimming Warning
The windward east coast looks beautiful but has extremely dangerous currents. Our guides will remind you at every stop: do not enter the water on the eastern coast under any circumstances. This is not a legal disclaimer — it's a genuine safety warning that saves lives.
Insider Tips from Our Guides
Things that don't make it into tour brochures but that our guides say to every group before they leave.
Book the morning slot, not afternoon
ATV trails get churned up and dusty by midday. Morning rides are cooler, the light is better for photos, and the jungle smells amazing just after sunrise. Afternoon slots are still great — just hotter.
The east coast road has the best tequila bars in Mexico
We're not exaggerating. The small beach bars on the eastern coast — Mezcalitos, Bob Marley, the unnamed palapa spots — serve mezcal and tequila that would cost three times as much in any resort. Don't skip them.
Swimming on the east coast will get you killed
Not an exaggeration. The windward coast looks beautiful, but the currents are violent. Look with your eyes, take your photos, and get back in the Jeep. Every year tourists ignore the signs. Don't be that person.
ATV doesn't require any prior experience
Your guide will walk you through everything in about 10 minutes. If you can drive a car you can handle an ATV on Cozumel trails. The pace is appropriate for first-timers — this isn't a race.
Book direct and save 40% vs cruise ship excursions
Cruise lines are selling the same tours with a 40–60% markup. You book direct with us, same guides, same routes, same guarantee — just less money out of your pocket. We've been doing this since 1996.
Bring a GoPro or waterproof camera
The jungle sections and east coast cliffs are incredible to film. Phone cameras work fine for the Jeep tour but ATV vibration will make video shaky. A chest-mount GoPro is the move if you have one.
ATV & Jeep Tour FAQs
QDo I need experience to drive an ATV in Cozumel?
No experience needed. Your guide runs a full safety briefing before every tour. If you can drive a car or ride a bicycle, you can handle an ATV on our trails. The pace is set for all skill levels and your guide is always within sight.
QWhat is the minimum age for ATV tours in Cozumel?
Most operators require riders to be at least 16 to drive solo and 12+ to ride as a passenger. Children 6 and older can participate in dune buggy tours. The Private Jeep Tour accommodates all ages since you're a passenger in a vehicle.
QHow difficult are the ATV trails in Cozumel?
Cozumel ATV trails are rated Moderate — you'll encounter dirt paths, some roots, light mud in rainy season, and occasional bumps, but nothing extreme. These are not technical trails. Anyone with basic fitness can handle them comfortably.
QWhat is included in the Private Jeep Tour price of $75?
The $75 per person price includes the private Jeep with driver/guide, fuel, tequila tasting stop, a beach stop with swim time, a snorkel stop with gear, all entry fees, and free pier pickup and return. No hidden costs.
QCan I swim on the east coast during ATV or Jeep tours?
No — and we mean it. The eastern windward coast has extremely strong currents and wave action. It looks beautiful but swimming there is genuinely dangerous. Our guides will tell you the same. Take photos, enjoy the scenery, and stay on dry land.
QIs the Dune Buggy tour similar to the ATV tour?
Very similar difficulty and route type. The main difference is that buggies are side-by-side two-seaters, making them better for couples or friends who want to ride together. ATVs are solo with slightly more individual control and a more 'you against the trail' feel.
QWhat should I wear for an ATV or Jeep tour in Cozumel?
Closed-toe shoes are mandatory for ATV and dune buggy tours — sandals and flip flops are not allowed. Wear clothes you don't mind getting dusty or muddy. If your tour includes snorkeling, bring a change of clothes or a swimsuit underneath.
QWill we see wildlife on the ATV and Jeep routes?
Absolutely. The inland jungle routes pass through dense tropical forest where coatis, iguanas, tropical birds, and the occasional deer cross the path. The east coast road has massive iguanas sunning themselves on the road. Keep your eyes open.
QHow do I get to the tour from the cruise pier?
All our land tours include free pier pickup. We meet you at the pier exit with a sign showing your name and transfer you directly to the tour start. No taxis, no navigation, no stress.
QIs the Harley-Davidson tour suitable for beginner riders?
The Harley tour requires basic motorcycle riding experience — you need to be comfortable operating a motorcycle independently. It's not a lesson. The route is 100% paved highway with no technical sections, but you must be able to ride a real Harley-Davidson.
